The basic formula
Most chains cut a 14 inch large into 8 slices. Some pizzerias cut more. Pequod’s in Chicago lists its 14 inch large at 10 slices and its extra large at 12. So ask before you order. The slice count changes everything.
Pequod’s says most guests eat two or three slices. Three is the safer number when pizza is the whole meal. Two works if there’s pasta, salad or sandwiches next to it.
Here’s the math with 8 slice larges and three slices each:
| Guests | Slices needed | Large pizzas |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 30 | 4 |
| 20 | 60 | 8 |
| 30 | 90 | 12 |
| 40 | 120 | 15 |
| 50 | 150 | 19 |
Notice the 10 person row. Thirty slices divided by 8 is 3.75. You round up to 4 every time. Nobody remembers the leftover slice. Everybody remembers running out. For the drinks and ice to go with the pizza try our party food calculator.
Adjust for your crowd
The table assumes hungry adults. Real parties are messier than that.
Kids eat less. Pequod’s says so plainly and any parent will agree. A handy rule of thumb is to count two small children as one adult. Teenagers are the opposite. A group of 15 year olds after a soccer game can clear four or five slices each. Pequod’s notes that guests who’ve been active beforehand come in hungrier.
Crust matters too. Deep dish and stuffed pizzas fill people up faster than thin crust. Meat heavy toppings go further than plain cheese. If you’re ordering Chicago style deep dish for 30 people you can probably drop a pie or two.
Then split the order by topping. A common pattern for a mixed group looks like this:
- About a third plain cheese. It’s the safe pick for kids and picky eaters.
- About a third pepperoni.
- The rest split between a veggie pie and one or two specialty pies.
If you have vegetarian guests you can build a whole spread around them. Our vegetarian party menu has ideas that sit well next to pizza.

Bigger pies are better value per bite
Pizza is a circle. Area grows with the square of the radius. That’s why a small jump in diameter adds a lot of food.
A 12 inch pie has about 113 square inches. A 14 inch has about 154. A 16 inch has about 201. That 16 inch is nearly double the 12 inch even though it’s only four inches wider.
For 40 or 50 people extra larges cut down on boxes. Fewer boxes means less table space. Just remember they’re often cut into 12 slices. Rerun the formula with the right number.
Uneven cuts are a real problem with big orders. Busy shops sometimes rush the slicing. A sharp pizza cutter wheel lets you fix it in seconds or cut a pie into 16 squares for a kids’ table.
OXO Good Grips 3.5 inch Pizza Wheel
A 3.5 inch wheel goes through thick crust in one pass. It's handy when delivery pies arrive badly cut or you want smaller slices for kids.
What to like
- Comfortable soft grip handle
- Thumb guard keeps fingers clear
- Dishwasher safe
Watch out for
- Wheel can feel small on 18 inch pies
- Not meant for nonstick pans
Keeping 19 pizzas hot and safe
Big orders often come in waves. The first boxes sit while you wait for the rest. Stacked boxes stay warm for a while but not forever.
Insulated catering bags help bridge that gap. So does a large electric warming tray that can hold open boxes for people who come back for seconds. Our guide to food warmers for parties covers more options.
Bodaon Insulated Catering Bags (3 pack)
Each bag holds several boxes and keeps early pies warm while the rest arrive. They also work for carrying food to a park or office.
What to like
- Three bags in one pack
- Fold flat for storage
- Zip closure holds heat
Watch out for
- Fabric can get greasy and needs wiping
- Not a substitute for a heat source on long waits
Chefman Electric Warming Tray
The 21 by 16 inch surface fits a couple of open boxes or pans. Guests can grab warm slices for the second round.
What to like
- Large flat surface
- Adjustable temperature
- Easy to wipe clean
Watch out for
- Needs a nearby outlet
- Surface gets hot to the touch
Food safety rules still apply. The University of Florida IFAS Extension says hot food should be held at 140°F or above. Bacteria grow fast between 40°F and 140°F. Clemson’s Home and Garden Information Center says pizza should never be away from refrigeration for more than two hours. That’s true even with no meat on it. Outdoors above 90°F the limit drops to one hour.
Plates, napkins and leftovers
Pizza is greasy finger food. Thin plates fold under two slices. Go with heavy duty 10 inch paper plates and plan on two or three napkins per guest.
Amazon Basics Ultra 10 inch Paper Plates
A 10 inch plate fits two large slices side by side. The heavier build doesn't sag under oil and cheese.
What to like
- Sturdy enough for pizza
- Large 10 inch size
- Bulk pack for big groups
Watch out for
- Takes more trash space than thin plates
- Not compostable
Amazon Basics Paper Napkins (400 count)
A 400 count pack gives a 50 person party several napkins each with spares.
What to like
- Big count for the size
- Soft enough for greasy hands
- Works for other parties too
Watch out for
- Single ply feel for some users
- Bulky box to store
Amazon Basics Red Party Cups 18 oz
The classic 18 ounce cup covers a big crowd with spares for refills.
What to like
- 120 cups in a pack
- Sturdy walls
- Easy to write names on
Watch out for
- Plastic not ideal for eco minded hosts
- Large size can waste soda
Leftovers keep 3 to 4 days in the fridge according to Clemson. They’ll last 4 to 6 months in the freezer. Get them chilled within two hours of serving.
One last trick for big parties: order about two thirds of the pizzas for the start time and the rest to arrive 45 minutes later. The second wave lands hot just as the first round runs out.
Pizza is a classic for a kids birthday party and keeps costs down too. Our budget party food ideas have more cheap ways to fill a crowd. Plates and napkins for the pile of slices are in the party plates and cutlery shop.
