Plan on about four wing pieces per person when wings are one appetizer among several. Make it eight to ten pieces each when wings are the main event.

That works out to roughly half a pound per guest for snacking and a full pound per guest for dinner. Everything else is adjusting for your crowd.

The basic math

Most wings sold today are “party wings.” Each whole wing has been split into a drumette and a flat and the tip is gone. A pound of these raw usually gives you 8 to 10 pieces. Whole wings are bigger. You’ll get about 4 or 5 to the pound.

The National Chicken Council’s numbers back this up. Its 2017 Wing Report predicted Americans would eat 1.33 billion wings over Super Bowl weekend. It put their weight at about 166.25 million pounds. Do the division and each piece averages out at 2 ounces. That’s 8 pieces per pound.

Wings also shrink. They lose about a quarter of their weight as the fat renders out during cooking. So buy by raw weight. Don’t cut your order just because the raw pile looks huge.

How many pounds for your guest count

Here’s a quick table using half a pound per guest as an appetizer and one pound per guest as a main.

1051080 to 100
201020160 to 200

502550400 to 500

Nudge it up or down for who’s coming. The NCC report cited NPD Group data showing that wing eaters aged 18 to 24 eat about 61% more wings than other age groups. A college watch party needs the top of the range. A mixed crowd with kids and plenty of sides can sit at the bottom. Serving dips and sliders too? Our guide to how many appetizers per person helps you balance the whole spread. Our party food calculator can size the drinks and ice.

Drumettes are meatier than flats. Some guests only want one or the other. Pre-split packs give you a rough mix of both. A few extra pounds is cheap insurance against running out in the third quarter.

Cooking a big batch

Frying 20 pounds of wings at home is a slog. The oven is easier. Lay the wings in a single layer on sheet pans with wire racks so the fat drips away and hot air reaches the underside. A half sheet holds a couple of pounds without crowding. Crowded wings steam instead of crisping.

Best for baking big batches of crispy wings

CEKEE stainless half sheet pans with racks

The rack lifts wings off the pan so fat drains and the skin crisps. Bare stainless has no coating to scratch.

What to like

  • Racks fit inside the pans
  • Stainless steel resists rust
  • Dishwasher friendly

Watch out for

  • Racks need scrubbing after sticky sauce
  • Two may not fit side by side in small ovens

Poultry is safe at 165°F. Clemson Cooperative Extension says to put the thermometer in the thickest part and keep it off the bone. Touching bone throws the reading off. Check several wings from each pan because small ones finish first and big ones lag. An instant read thermometer makes this quick.

Best for checking many wings fast

ThermoMaven instant read thermometer

A fast probe lets you spot check several wings per pan. The oven door stays open for less time.

What to like

  • Quick readings
  • Thin probe suits small pieces
  • Easy to read display

Watch out for

  • Needs batteries
  • Not meant to stay in the oven

Keeping wings hot and safe

This is the rule that catches hosts out. Cooked food shouldn’t sit at room temperature for more than two hours. Clemson cuts that to one hour when it’s 90°F or hotter. That’s a real risk at a summer cookout.

The fix is to hold hot food above 140°F. A large slow cooker on the warm setting works well for sauced wings. Toss them in sauce and keep the lid on. Guests can help themselves all night.

Best for holding sauced wings for hours

Crock-Pot 7 Quart Manual Slow Cooker

Seven quarts holds a big batch of sauced wings. The warm setting keeps them hot with little fuss.

What to like

  • Large capacity
  • Simple manual dial
  • Removable stoneware crock

Watch out for

  • Takes up counter space
  • Dry rubbed wings go soft under the lid

Dry rubbed or crispy wings do better uncovered. Spread them on a large electric warming tray with a different flavor in each pan. Our roundup of food warmers for parties covers more options.

Best for several wing flavors on one buffet

Chefman Electric Warming Tray

The 21 by 16 inch surface fits a few pans side by side. Crispy wings stay warm without steaming under a lid.

What to like

  • Big flat surface
  • Adjustable heat
  • Wipes clean

Watch out for

  • Needs an outlet near the table
  • Surface gets hot to the touch

Put out small amounts and refill often. Fresh hot wings beat a heap that’s been sitting there since kickoff.

The extras people forget

Wings are messy. Plan on three or four napkins per guest. A 400 pack of thick paper napkins covers a 50 person party with room to spare. Set out an empty bowl every few feet for bones. Otherwise they end up on your coffee table.

Best for big messy wing parties

Vplus 3 ply dinner napkins 400 pack

Three ply napkins hold up to sticky sauce better than thin ones. Four hundred is enough for a large crowd.

What to like

  • Thick three ply build
  • Large pack size
  • Plain white suits any party

Watch out for

  • Bulky to store
  • Overkill for a small gathering

Count celery and carrot sticks too. A few of each per guest is plenty since most people grab them for the dip.

Leftovers go into shallow containers and into the fridge inside that two hour window. Clemson says to eat cooked meat within three days.

One last tip. If your wings are frozen, move them to the fridge two days early. Clemson lists 3 to 9 hours to thaw chicken pieces in the refrigerator. A tightly packed 10 pound bag takes far longer than a single tray, so give it the extra day.

Wings are a natural fit for a BBQ party menu. If you are feeding a crowd on finger food alone then read our finger food for 50 guests plan. Slow cookers and buffet servers that keep wings hot are in our electric warmers and cookers shop.

How we picked

We compare maker specs with owner reviews and expert sources like food safety guidance and caterer serving rules. We look for the problems owners report again and again. Then we keep the products whose specs fit feeding a crowd at home. These picks come from that research and not from our own hands on trials. Nobody pays for a place in our guides.
